Top of Mind - A Fallacy???

During my professional career as a marketing guy, specifically in the field of brand development, one of the major focuses was on the loyalty status of the consumers towards the product. Quantifying loyalty is one of the major challenges that a marketing guy faces. Researches by a professional agency seem to be the only way out. When it’s about quantifying loyalty, the term “Top of Mind”, though cliché, is the favorite. In simple terms it’s the first brand that a respondent spells out without any aid during a research. When all the respondents are interviewed the ToM usually gives a fair idea of how popular the brand is.
But looking at my personal experience and today’s competitive market, where a hell lot of variety for even the simplest of products is available, a big question emerges in my mind. Does ToM really help a brand to sell more and does it really help to build loyalty among the consumers or is it just making the marketers myopic?
My observation in today’s context has been that the ToM brand, instead of facilitating instant purchase or consideration, acts as a stepping stone towards considering other brands. The attitude is something like, “Yeah I know this brand very well so why not look for some brands that I don’t know about. Maybe they’re better?”
So the big question is should ToM really be considered as a true indicator of loyalty and should marketers be happy with just the highest level of brand awareness?

In the name of GOD

In the name of GOD

The first picture I'm posting in my blog starts from one of my favorite but a sad picture I took during "Indra Jatra" a very big festival in Kathmandu.
During various of my photographic expeditions this picture has been able to hit me whenever I look at it.
A simple picture of a begging woman is not a very surprising or a new thing in the streets of Kathmandu. But here what I captured was not only that. During this festival thousands of people come to visit the deities and offer a lot of prayers along with money and food to the gods and goddesses. But ironically any human action is driven by a certain kind of vested interest and this is where the ignorance of this begging woman takes place in a holy place.
I feel my thoughts were perfectly captured by the picture where a line of people are moving towards the God's statue amidst which the old lady begs but is ignored.

Faster than a car

It seems like an eon ago when I was that foolish kid trying to outrun a moving car by running as fast as I could. The fear was not of being run over by it but of losing the race. It was pure. Just the win mattered. No matter how many times I lost the race, I always was ready for another. I really didn't know where my disappointment of the last defeat got lost.
Today the kid tried to do the same, crossing my vehicle and nearly being run over. I hit the brakes, got pissed off and nearly shouted but the memory stopped me.
What is it about this kid trying to outrun my vehicle?
Well I compared and it was nothing but the zeal to win. But a pure win. Clean win. True win.
Where does it get lost in due course of time, I don't know. Wish it'd stayed with every kid trying to outrun a car in motion. Wish it stays with me till the end.
